DESTRUCTION OF EVIDENCE:

More videos reveal illegal searches, theft, brutality by SFPD

by Tamara Aparton
May 18, 2011

San Francisco – A San Francisco police officer accused of stealing items from a man’s residential hotel room following a drug arrest has been captured on video in a second incident, appearing to leave a residence at the Julian Hotel with property never booked into evidence.

“This incident, coupled with similar footage at the Henry, Royan and Jefferson hotels, indicates there are groups of officers engaging in systematic misconduct,”
Public Defender Jeff Adachi said.

The footage, the latest in a string of videos revealing serious police misconduct, prompted, Public Defender, Jeff Adachi to renew his call for police to employ a zero tolerance policy for officers who commit perjury.

“We’ve yet to run across a single video that matches up with what police swear to in their report,” Gonzalez said. Adachi and Gonzalez have also called upon the Board of Supervisors to draft legislation outlawing the use of residential hotel master keys by police.

Surveillance video from the Henry Hotel reveals that San Francisco Police Department narcotics officers falsified police reports in order to justify searching residences without warrants or consent.

"For years our clients have reported tales of police entering their homes without warrants or consent, in direct contravention of the Fourth Amendment and in direct contradiction of the police version of events," Dunlap said.  "Now we have proof both of the police violating core Constitutional rights and committing perjury to cover their tracks."

As of December 27, 2013, two and  half years after the videos and misconduct surfaced not one of the officers involved has been disciplined or charged with a crime.

What Happened To Mitrice Richardson?

Los Angeles Magazine

The suspicious circumstances surrounding the disappearance and death of Matrice Richardson.

Matrice Richardson mysteriously disappeared from the custody of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station.  A year later her body is found not too far away.  The crime scene and recovery of her body is contaminated by officers conducting the investigation.  Video footage of Richardson in the Sheriff's station has been edited.  No explanation as to why the video footage has been removed and Richardson's family has been denied access to the missing video footage.  This after the Sheriff initially falsely stated that no video existed when in fact there was one.  Several other questionable acts were perpetrated by the authorities in particular is Michael Gennaco's investigation of the incident.  Mr. Gennaco heads the Office of Independent Review that conducts investigations of complaints made against police officers and sheriff's deputies.  Based upon all of the evidence and Mr. Gennaco's inaccurate and incomplete report on the Richardson case it appears that there is a cover up going on.  This shouldn't suprise anyone, for Michael Gennaco covered up the crimes of the Palo Alto Police.

Federal monitor blasts Seattle police reform efforts
By Joel Moreno

SEATTLE -- A federal monitor says Seattle police are still fighting reforms that were court-ordered by the Department of Justice to cut down on instances of excessive force and biased policing.

Under terms of the Settlement Agreement the police department agreed to in 2012, federal monitor Merrick Bobb files a twice-annual update on the police department's progress toward reform. The latest report finds the pace of change troubling.

The monitor payed special attention to how officer-involved shootings are analyzed, saying the process falls "well short of a full, fair and impartial analyses."

"There were some conclusions that the Firearms Review Board have intentionally colluded to have an opinion to make a recommendation that was less than transparent," Harrell said.

The monitor also criticized SPD's in-car camera program, saying "video and audio are missing far too frequently" in arrests or incidents that come under review.

"There are some that are having problems with their microphones," Chief Pugel said, adding that everyone is trained to use the system and expected to meet all obligations.

Former police officer sentenced for destroying evidence

Vincent Thomas Mater, 42, was sentenced to three years of informal probation and 60 days of community service.

Prosecutors objected to the sentence, arguing "for jail time based on the nature of the crime, destruction of evidence possibly related to an inmate's death, and the defendant's violation of his position of trust," the District Attorney's Office said

Fullerton Policeman Accused Of Destroying Evidence After Jail Cell Suicide

FULLERTON (CBS/AP) -- A former police officer in Fullerton is accused of crushing his audio recorder and destroying any comments made in the arrest of a suspected drunken driver who later committed suicide in jail.

Prosecutors said Tuesday that Vincent Mater was charged with destruction of evidence and vandalism.

Mater was placed on administrative leave in June and later quit. He was not found criminally responsible in the death.

According to the LA Times, Mater told investigators there was nothing on the audio recording he “would not want others to hear.”

The officer claims he flung the recording device against a metal door out of frustration over difficulties in downloading the audio.

It was not immediately clear if Mater has an attorney.

The Hartford Courant MIDDLETOWN — — T

he state police union has claimed that a high-ranking department official received preferential treatment after being found to have violated department policy related to an order that an audio recording be erased.

The union says Lt. Col. Robert Corona, second in command of the state police, is being allowed to retire before serving a suspension.

Union officials held a press conference Tuesday at the state police headquarters to speak about what it perceives as preferential treatment to Corona.

"The purpose was to bring this matter of public concern forward because we believe there's a lack of transparency and consistency in enforcing the rules within this administration depending on what rank you are," Matthews said after the press conference. "It's unfair to our members."
